Overview

In a world where the K-Pop phenomenon reigns supreme, the “Golden Moments” project aims to redefine the very essence of K-Pop fandom. With the explosive growth of the global K-Pop community, a unique and innovative platform is needed to cater to the desires and aspirations of fans worldwide. Our original concept, inspired by Monopoly, introduced an exciting twist where collecting three of the same card grants fans the chance to roll a dice for exclusive prizes such as merchandise, albums, and even tickets to their favorite band’s concert. “Golden Moments” is a groundbreaking initiative that leverages blockchain technology and the concept of digital photo card collecting to connect K-Pop enthusiasts, both in Korea and internationally.

This project’s vision is to establish “Golden Moments” as the central hub for K-Pop activity—a space where fans can freely connect, trade, and celebrate their shared passion for K-Pop idols. Beyond this, it seeks to explore the boundaries of what it means to be a K-Pop fan in the digital age, offering not only a platform for collecting and trading digital photo cards but also creating a vibrant community that fosters unity, engagement, and unforgettable experiences for fans worldwide.

My Role:

In my role as a product designer and creative director for the Golden Moments project, I have been instrumental in shaping the platform’s unique identity. Inspired by the enchanting world of sports card collecting, I introduced the concept of digital photo card collectibles, which serves as the cornerstone of the user experience. These digital photo cards, represented by a camera-themed motif, are akin to disposable cameras, capturing exclusive moments that are unique to each card. Acquiring a pack of these cards is akin to acquiring a roll of film, where each card offers the possibility of obtaining a rare and cherished photo. Through innovative design and creative direction, I aim to make Golden Moments an unforgettable experience where fans can capture, collect, and cherish their favorite artists’ golden moments in all their multifaceted glory.

The Challenge

Golden Moments addresses the challenge of connecting with the global K-Pop fanbase by utilizing blockchain technology and NFTs to offer unique fan experiences and investment opportunities for artists. While traditional methods like social media and fan events were used in the past, they had limitations in terms of ownership and unique experiences. Today, platforms like DapperLabs and the Flow blockchain offer user-friendly solutions, which Golden Moments leverages to create a comprehensive platform for K-Pop fans to connect, collect, and engage with their favorite artists, redefining the fan experience in the digital age.

User Flow

It begins with registration and onboarding, including the option to connect a MetaMask wallet. Users then explore the marketplace, make purchases using various payment processors, and manage their digital collectibles. The platform encourages engagement through challenges, displays user and fandom leaderboards, and rewards participation. Users can also engage in community governance and access customer support. Optional features include customized profiles for fandoms and embedded content like music videos and community challenges, enhancing the overall user experience.

Mind Mapping

Facilitating the brainstorming and organization of ideas and features. It visually represents the various components of the platform, such as the digital collectibles marketplace, challenges, leaderboards, and community governance, helping to identify connections and relationships between these elements. This approach aids in project planning and scope definition, breaking down complex concepts into manageable components and ensuring alignment among team members. The mind map serves as a foundational blueprint that guides subsequent stages of design and development, streamlining the creation of a cohesive and user-friendly platform.

Wireframe & Prototyping

Wireframing and prototyping are pivotal steps in the Golden Moments design process. Wireframing involves creating simplified, blueprint-like representations of the platform’s pages, focusing on layout, content placement, and user interface elements. These wireframes serve as a foundational visual guide for the overall design. They allow us to map out the user journey, ensuring that fans can easily access features like the digital collectibles marketplace, challenges, leaderboards, and governance sections.

Prototyping takes wireframes to the next level by adding interactivity. It’s where we bring the design to life, allowing us to simulate user interactions and test the user flow. Prototypes help us validate the platform’s functionality and user experience before development begins. We can identify and address any usability issues, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable experience for K-Pop fans. This iterative process of wireframing and prototyping ensures that Golden Moments meets its goal of connecting fans, providing a unique collectibles marketplace, and empowering users to engage deeply with their favorite artists.

The Problem

Golden Moments addresses four key challenges in the K-Pop fandom space. Firstly, it resolves the issue of a fragmented fan experience by providing a cohesive platform for fans to connect with their favorite artists, eliminating the need to navigate multiple channels. Secondly, it tackles passive fan engagement by offering interactive features like challenges, initiatives, and collaborative projects, encouraging fans to actively participate and support their idols. Thirdly, it addresses the problem of isolated fan communities by creating an inclusive space where fans from diverse backgrounds can unite and share their passion for K-Pop. Lastly, Golden Moments revolutionizes digital collectibles, simplifying the curation and management of these items and enhancing their visual appeal, allowing users to cherish their digital photo cards in an engaging manner.

User Research

Understanding the needs and behaviors of K-pop fans, particularly in the context of the Golden Moments platform. One significant insight they’ve uncovered is the thriving market for homemade photo cards within the fan community, with fans selling these cards for prices as high as $200 due to the absence of a legitimate marketplace for such items. This finding directly aligns with the use case of developing a dedicated online platform for collecting and verifying digital and physical photo cards.

Moreover, this insight deeply resonates with the user persona, as it highlights the user’s strong desire to collect and own rare photo cards while emphasizing the importance of authenticity and security. By recognizing the substantial demand for a trustworthy marketplace, the user researcher helps guide the platform’s development in a way that ensures user needs are met. Golden Moments, thanks to this research, is well-positioned to create an environment where fans can confidently collect, trade, and showcase their cherished photo cards, fostering a more enjoyable and rewarding user experience.

Questions

These “How might we…” questions are designed to inspire brainstorming and ideation on potential solutions to the challenges and opportunities identified during the user research process.

  1. How might we make it easier for K-Pop fans to connect and engage with their favorite artists in a meaningful way through digital collectibles?
  2. How might we address the challenges of authenticity and scarcity in digital collectibles, ensuring that fans truly own a piece of K-Pop history?
  3. How might we encourage more active and rewarding fan engagement beyond passive content consumption?
  4. How might we create a more inclusive platform that bridges the gap between international and Korean K-Pop fans?
  5. How might we simplify the curation, management, and showcasing of digital collectibles, including static images, videos, animations, and more, while ensuring an enjoyable user experience?

Competitions

I’ve conducted a comprehensive competitive analysis to understand our position in the evolving K-Pop and Web3 landscape. Our key competitors include Sunmiya Club, Bellygom, Momentica and NBA TopShots, all of which have leveraged Web3 technology in unique ways to engage fans. While these competitors have perfected their sign-up flows, centralized systems, and digital asset representation, Golden Moments aims to stand out by focusing on inclusivity, innovative fan experiences, and community governance. Our vision goes beyond NFTs and digital collectibles to bridge the gap between fans and artists, fostering lasting connections and value in the K-Pop fandom metaverse.

Design System

The design system and the implementation of an 8pt grid system within Golden Moments are integral aspects of the platform’s user experience and visual consistency. The design system provides a unified and cohesive look and feel to the entire platform, ensuring that elements like typography, colors, icons, and spacing are consistently applied across all screens and components. This consistency not only enhances the platform’s aesthetics but also makes it more intuitive for users to navigate and interact with.

The 8pt grid system, in particular, plays a crucial role in structuring the layout and alignment of elements, creating a harmonious and visually pleasing user interface. It simplifies the design process, streamlining the placement of elements and maintaining a sense of order and balance. This systematic approach not only improves the overall user experience but also facilitates the scalability and maintainability of the platform as it continues to evolve.

By employing these design principles and systems, Golden Moments benefits from a polished and user-friendly interface, ultimately contributing to a positive and memorable user experience for K-Pop fans worldwide.

Colors Guide

Golden Moments’ color palette not only reflects the platform’s branding but also meets strict accessibility standards. These colors are thoughtfully chosen to ensure accessibility, providing an inclusive experience for all users, including those with disabilities. The palette includes high-contrast combinations that enhance content visibility and legibility. This commitment to accessibility ensures that text and essential interface elements are easily discernible against background colors, benefiting users with visual impairments and promoting an inclusive and enjoyable experience for all K-Pop fans.

The Execution

Golden Moments was marked by a meticulous focus on user-friendly features and a seamless interface, including Stripe payment integration. We continually improved the homepage, challenge pages, and user flows, optimizing navigation and data accessibility based on user feedback and heatmaps. We faced unique challenges in handling artist intellectual property (IP) and addressing user skepticism about blockchain technology, striking a balance between education and reassurance. Our strategic compromise was maintaining a Web2-style interface for now, with plans for Web3 integration when our user base is blockchain-ready. This approach ensured a secure, user-centric platform while positioning us for future innovation in the K-Pop fandom landscape.

Iterate, Iterate, and Iterate

At Golden Moments, we wholeheartedly embrace the mantra of “Iterate, Iterate, and Iterate.” Our commitment to continuous improvement is deeply embedded in our design process. We’re constantly fine-tuning various aspects of our platform, including the content on our homepage and the design of our collectible packs. We understand that the placement of our products and the user flow matter significantly, and we frequently update and refine these elements to ensure they resonate with our users.

To gain insights into user behavior and preferences, we leverage sophisticated tools like heat maps. These visual representations help us understand how users interact with our platform, allowing us to pinpoint areas that may need improvement. For example, we closely examine the user flow from the homepage to the challenge page, striving to reduce unnecessary clicks and deliver our message more directly and efficiently.

Our dedication to improvement means that we’re always working diligently to enhance the user experience and make Golden Moments even better for our passionate K-Pop community.

Challenges and Compromises

Navigating artist intellectual property (IP) in K-Pop and addressing user skepticism about blockchain were significant hurdles. We’ve strived to protect artist IP while educating users about blockchain’s benefits. We’ve taken a phased approach, starting with a user-friendly interface and Stripe integration (Web2), with plans to introduce Web3 features as users become more blockchain-savvy. These challenges have shaped our platform development, emphasizing communication, legal diligence, and user education to create a secure and engaging K-Pop fan experience.

These challenges and compromises have played a vital role in shaping the development of our platform, highlighting the importance of clear communication, legal diligence, and user education. As we continue this journey, our unwavering commitment remains to provide a secure, user-centric, and engaging platform that bridges the K-Pop community with its idols in an innovative and meaningful manner.
